چکیده

The relationship between quadratic mean diameter and tree density appeared curvilinear on a log-log scale, based on data from direct-seeded slash pine (Pinus elliottii var. elliottii Engelm.) stands. The self-thinning trajectory followed a straight line for high tree density levels and then turned away from this line as tree density decreased. A system of equations was developed to model the reciprocal effects of stand diameter and density through time. The equations performed well for these data. Since the model is constrained according to the self-thinning rule, it should provide reasonable extrapolation. FOR. SCI. 46(3):317-321. Additional

Study on Slash Pine (Pinus elliottii) as a Short Rotation Forestry in the North of Iran

Forests of Iran located on the Southern border of the Caspian Sea cover 1.9 million hectares. The Caspian forests are divided into four separate forestry areas. One of these being Guilan influx area with total area of 565000 hectares. About 30 to 40 percent of Guilan province forests are suitable to short rotation forestry for afforestation. Slash pine (Pinus elliottii) is one of the main exo...

Effects of reproduction methods and overstory species composition on understory light availability in longleaf pine–slash pine ecosystems

The restoration of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) ecosystem types ranging from xeric uplands to hydric flatwoods is the goal of significant management efforts in the southeastern United States. Overstory species composition across ecosystem types varies from pure longleaf to mixed species stands, with slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) becoming more predominant on hydric soils, though ...

Economic Sustainability of Payments for Water Yield in Slash Pine Plantations in Florida

Forests play an important role with respect to water resources, and can be managed to increase surfaceand groundwater recharge. With the creation of a forest water yield payment system, privately-owned forests, which comprise the majority of forest area in the Southeastern US, could become an important potential source of additional water supply. The economic tradeoffs between timber revenues a...

Parameterization of the 3-PG model for Pinus elliottii stands using alternative methods to estimate fertility rating, biomass partitioning and canopy closure

The forest simulation model, 3-PG, has been widely applied as a useful tool for predicting growth of forest species in many countries. The model has the capability to estimate the effects of management, climate and site characteristics on many stand attributes using easily available data. Currently, there is an increasing interest in estimating biomass and assessing the potential impact of clim...

Results of a Long-term Thinning Study in Some Natural, Even-aged Pine Stands of the Midsouth

This paper reports on a long-term thinning study established in stands of naturally seeded loblolly (Pinus taeda L.) and shortleaf (P. echinata Mill.) pine in southern Arkansas and northern Louisiana. Plots were established in 1949–50 and 1954 in previously unmanaged stands, thinned about once every 5 years from age 20 to 60 years (40 years of active cutting, to 1990). The study was discontinue...
